The Bengal is a relatively new breed of cat. They were officially registered with The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1983.
It is a unique breed in that it was created by mating a wild Asian leopard cat (ALC) with an American tabby.  The goal of breeding Bengals is to preserve the wild, exotic look of the Asian Leopard Cat while creating a domestic cat with a desirable temperament.  Very early generation Bengal cats possess physical characteristics closely related to their ancestor, the ALC.  Wild personality traits can be guided toward a desirable domestic cat with the proper rearing as a kitten.
Cat organizations frequently restrict very early generation Bengals from the show ring.  A Bengal must be fourth generation or more to compete in TICA.
Considering everything, when purchasing a Bengal cat or kitten, it is prudent for the buyer to evaluate not only the beauty of the Bengal, but also its personality.

COLOR, PATTERNS, AND QUALITIES
Color: There are five standard colors of Bengal cats that are currently accepted by TICA and ACFA.  They are Seal Sepia Point, Seal Mink Point, Seal Lynx point, Brown Tabby, and Silver Tabby.  All other colors are shown in the New Breed Color Class. Some breeders are working hard to develop other beautiful colors, such as the Blue Tabby, and Black Tabby.
Seal Sepia or Seal Mink Point (Snow): The background color is cream, ivory, or a light tan with a clear pattern color of sable brown to very dark brown.  The tail tip is dark brown.  Eyes are green, gold, or blue-green.
Seal Lynx Point (Snow): The background color is cream or ivory.  The pattern color may be various shades of brown from very light tan to chocolate brown.  The tail tip is dark brown.  Eyes are blue.
Brown Tabby (Classic Bengal): This Bengal may have either a spotted or marbled pattern on a background ranging from brown to gold to rust color.  Brown Bengals with gold or rust shades in their coat are said to be rufoused; a desirable quality.
Silver Tabby:  The background color is silver gray.   Markings are spots or marble in black.   A Silver with glitter shimmers like silver jewelry.
Spotted Bengals can have a variety of types of spots; solid, or rosetted.  Rosettes are two or more tones of color within the spot, often with the darker color outlining the spot and the center of the spot a lighter shade of color.  The spots can be round, arrowhead, donut, or paw print shape.  It is most desirable to have rosetted spots with highly contrasted colors.
Marbled Bengals have a coat of two or more colors that resembles Italian Marble.  It is most desirable to have three or more highly contrasted colors in a random marbled pattern.  As with the spotted Bengal, the marbled Bengal must have a spotted tummy.
Glitter - The Brown Tabby Beengal may possess glitter, which is another desirable characteristic.  Glitter is light reflecting off hollow hair shafts within the Bengal’s coat.  This light causes the coat to appear to have shimmering gold metallic threads in it.  It is a very beautiful look.
Pelt - The Bengals’ coat is also unique in that it is pelted, a characteristic derived from the wild Asian Leopard Cat.  It is thicker, shorter, denser than other cats and is extremely soft.  To pet a Bengal is similar to the feel of a mink coat!
Bengals possess several personality traits that perspective buyers need to be aware of.  Most Bengals love heights and seek the highest place in the house to perch.  They are often found on top of shelves, entertainment centers and kitchen cabinets.  They love to run and play with anything that wiggles.  They love to interact with people and other animals and will snuggle with either.  Playing in water is so much fun and often you’ll find them drinking from the faucet, playing in their water bowl or joining members of the family in the bathtub.
They are active, affectionate, intelligent, responsive, and friendly cats. You will have a relationship with this cat, unlike any other.
